Review: JLU Fan Collection Star Sapphire
Posted by Lindsay
I'm such a sucker for a good villainess. Admittedly, I only know Star Sapphire from JLU, but I enjoy her there. I know she and her new crew are a big part of current DC continuity, but my knowledge of current continuity is far from complete. Other JLU figures reviewed recently include GL/Fire/Ice three pack Jon Stewart and Sinestro Luthor/Cheetah/Shade and Galatea/Huntress/Superman three packs And about a year ago we looked at the DC Direct 6" Star Sapphire. |
Appearance and Construction: 7/10
Star Sapphire is based on the now-ubiquitous wide-legged JLU female body. The only sculpted piece is her head, which mostly works, considering her sleek design.
I wish that the jewel in the center of her mask were sculpted, though, rather than just a paint splotch. Technically her pink yoke should extend over the tops of her shoulders, and really her glove tops should be sculpted as well. I do love the look of her face, her crafty smile and wicked eyes. There is some paint smudging along the lower edge of her mask, but the rest of her paint is crisp and clear. The color match between the pink paint on her arms and torso and her boots, which are cast in pink plastic, is right on. |
Packaging and Accessories: ---
The packaging is pretty standard by now, although this one is fairly crushed. The newest ones have the new packaging color scheme, but this figure is part of the last wave before the switch.
As a single packed JLU, I expect one accessory, and as a female JLU figure, I expect a stand. I got both. The stand is essential, as usual. The accessory is a somewhat whimsical translucent magenta bolt, representing Sapphire's energy blast.
It's kinda cool, but not very useful. She can hold it, but that doesn't actually look right for her power.
In this picture, I'm holding it up just out of frame.

Price Tag and Final Analysis: 7/10
Star Sapphire has been only available as part of a three pack until now, so when I saw this single-pack at a local toy shop, I snapped her up.
I've been impressed with the longevity of this toy line. Even though I have a LOT of these, and I am no completionist, even I still find new ones that I want. There are plenty more that I would want, or have bought by now, actually, if more of them were single packed, instead of 3 or 6 packs with characters I already have. (Looking at you, Livewire.) I paid 8.99 for this single figure, which is more than I like to pay for a 4” figure. It's not a ludicrous price, though. And like I said at the top, I'm a sucker for a good villainess. |
Those are only some of the ones I've bought, not customized. For a bunch of custom Gotham gals, step over to The Blue Fairy's Workshop. Or if you're interested in our thoughts on recent films (superhero and otherwise) try The Middle Room.
