Review: Galactic Heroes Bonanza!
Posted by Lindsay

Despite the fact that our apartment is small, and all open surfaces are occupied, we still insist on collecting new toys.

It's a problem, really.

But Galactic Heroes are so darn cute!  And so small, you can surely fit a couple more onto that already over-crowded display, right?

Due to backlog, I'm going to review FOUR packs today:
  • R2-D2 and Jawas
  • Nien Nunb and Admiral Ackbar
  • Han Solo and Logray
  • Bespin Leia and Vader

Appearance and Construction:

Jawas/R2: 7/10
Nien Nunb/Admiral Ackbar: 8/10
Han Solo/Logray: 8/10
Vader/Leia: 7/10

With Galactic Heroes, what you see is what you get, and it's usually worth pawing through the racks to find the best paint ops you can, because they do vary.

R2 is a solid sculpt with a good amount of paint detail, although some of the blue bleeds here and there.  The two Jawas look very nice, and that's really the reason to pick up this pack.  I like that they aren't the same sculpt in any detail, their weapons and packs are nicely molded, and the paint is clean, although one of them is missing paint on his feet that the other has.

Nien Nunb is fine.  He has really clean, vibrant paint ops, but really we picked up this pack for Ackbar.

He has the distinction of being the one of the very few of our 40+ Galactic Heroes who doesn't have a weapon.  Really the only others are R2, C3PO and the two band members with instruments.  I really appreciate that Hasbro didn't feel like they had to give him a blaster.  He commands from the bridge, not the front lines, thank you.

The paint pattern on his skin is really nice, and the gloss on his eyes sells it for me.

Han (Endor coat) and Logray is one of the packs I really wanted.  I love that the adorable tiny Ewok has an adorable tiny skull-hat, and an adorable bone-axe-totem-thing.  The juxtaposition I've always enjoyed in the cannibal teddy bears is very clear in this toy.

Also these two have the most paint ops of any in these packs, and they're for the most part clean.  They each have a little misplaced splotch here or there, but I'm wowed by the number of different colors on each one.

If you can find a pack with less bleed, feel free to give them a 9.

Vader is Vader, we already have a couple.  But he's a really solid sculpt, and the selective gloss brings out the costume nicely.

I really bought this pack for the Leia, who I'll call Bespin Leia (to distinguish her from New Hope Leia, Boushh Leia, Slave Leia, and Endor Leia, all of which I already had in this scale.)

The sculpt is nice, and the detailing on the dress comes close to awesome, but she's got a lot of paint bleed, so I'm going to have to dock her a little.  Even though she should get extra invisible points for being in one of my favorite costumes.

Packaging and Accessories: ---

If you've seen these guys, you know what the packs look like, and if you've been in a toy store in the last 5 years, you've probably seen these guys.  No accessories here, these are more PVC miniatures than action figures.  Unless you want to count one of the three figures in the Jawa pack, since it went for the same price as the others, but as much as I like the Jawas, I can see why they wanted to beef up that pack a little. No Bonus.

All of these packs did come with a 'poster' with an animated scene on one side, but since it's got the other packs for you to collect on the rear, I call that a checklist/advertising/packaging, and thus it goes into the recycling.

Play and Display: ---

Vader is the only one of the humanoids with articulation: he can swing his lightsaber arm around.  Which is kinda useful, but whatever.  R2D2 can swing his legs around, but that's also not terribly impressive.

The similarly sized Superhero Squad figures manage to fit articulation in, but these ones don't, for the most part.  It would be nice to have a couple of posing options, or to have removable weapons, but for these little guys, it's not worth a penalty.

Just be aware you're getting tiny statues; tiny adorable SD Star Wars statues.

Price Tag and Final Analysis:

Jawas/R2: 7/10
Nien Nunb/Admiral Ackbar: 8/10
Han Solo/Logray: 8/10
Vader/Leia: 7/10

We love these cute little guys, but often balk at the standard retail prices for tiny bits of plastic and paint.  Toysrus.com has a limited selection (including many of these guys) at 6.99, but our local stores tend to mark them up to 8 or more.  We picked up the first three packs on sale at two for 8.99, or 4.50 each, and Vader/Leia at 6.99 (I really wanted it).  At this point, they're running out of characters we still want to appear in this series.

And I think there may finally be no room left in the display.   We have a LOT of these.  Although if they re-release Hoth Leia (she was a multipack exclusive), I'm sure I'll find space.  Just a couple more pictures:

I rant about books on a weekly basis on The Blue Fairy's Bookshelf.
Both blogs are illustrated with many more pictures from our collection. You think this is a lot of toys?  You should see our apartment.
