Calico Critters: The Cottontail Rabbit Twins
Posted by Lindsay

More adorable Calico Critters.

See previous review for my history with these figures.  In short, I collected them as a child and recently rediscovered them.  They are small fuzzy anthropomorphic animals in slightly old-fashioned costumes.  They come in "Family" packs of 4, packs with one or two figures plus accessories and furniture, or "Baby Twins" packs of 2.

This pack, received as a gift, is a pair of baby bunnies.

These stand about 1.75 inches tall.  The sculpting is clean and the flocking well done.

The tiny paws even have tiny toes, although they're a bit obscured by the flocking.

The details on the tiny outfits are a nice touch, if the pink/blue is a bit on the nose.  The outfits aren't as well made as the larger figures', though.  The fabric/lace is fraying a bit, and doesn't seem sturdy enough to go on and off easily.

The paint on the face and ears is clean and bright.

See the contrast above of the new figure vs. a similar (much played-with) figure from my childhood.

Packaging and Extras: ---

The packaging is fairly basic.  I am tempted to give them a point for package design, which is almost unheard of here at the Bin.  The figures are each held in, quite securely, by one soft elastic, which is easily removed.  It's a pleasure to open a toy package and have the figures come free so quickly.

The costumes are removable, although I didn't test that here, because I was sure I would never get the bows to go back as nicely as they are.  No other accessories.

Play and Display: -1

Posing is highly limited with these two, the only joint is the cut neck.  The sculpted poses are super super cute, but for the price I expect either a few more options or some tiny toys, or a crib or something.  Point deduction.

The bottom of the packaging gives a name and brief character description for each rabbit.

Price Tag and Final Analysis: 6/10

These are sweet little figures, but they are fairly expensive for their size.  I'm hesitant to splurge on these little ones when the larger figures are more articulated.  I like having some, but I resent that it's kind of a marketing scam.  To have the "Whole Family" you have to buy the Family Pack, AND the Twins Pack.  Almost all the Animals offered have both.  The company certainly knows how to push young collector's buttons.

Baby two-packs (of any animal) have a list price of $10.  (Which works out to 5 each, and I think that's a little high for how small they are. )  You may be able to find them cheaper online.

I haven't seen them hit a store sale yet, but they have only recently appeared at our local Toys'R'Us, so I'm holding out hope.
