Custom: He-Man's Sword
Last year, I picked up the DC Universe Classics Vs. Masters of the Universe Classics 2-packs. In addition to a extraneous Superman and a welcome Lex Luthor, this meant I finally had the He-Man and Skeletor action figures I'd dreamed about since I was a child.
No, wait: that was someone else's childhood. I hated He-Man growing up, and only came around on the property after seeing the grossly underrated 2002 Cartoon Network series.
You know, something with GOOD WRITING. Great writing, in fact: if you've never seen the relaunch, you should track it down. The DVD's are dirt cheap.
At any rate, if you read my review of those 2-packs, you already know I really liked the toys. I liked the sculpts, paint, articulation, and everything else. Well, almost everything. Actually, there was one little detail I wasn't so keen on: accessories.
Both He-Man and Skeletor were missing a key, iconic weapon. In both cases, there was justification: the toys were released with a reprinted "classic" comic crossover from the eighties, and the accessories matched. On top of that, I do have some sympathy with Mattel wanting to leave out something so fans who dished out big bucks for the earlier releases on Mattycollector didn't feel like they were scammed.
But I couldn't leave things like that. If Mattel wasn't going to give me a decent sword for He-Man, I'd get my own. That brings us to the Power-Rangers "Super Legends" figure above, purchased at Conway for about $6 (the price tag says $8, but he was 25% off).

I have even less love for Power Rangers than I do for He-Man, but I know a good sword when I see one. Even so, I balked at the idea of dropping six bucks on an accessory. I justified it by assuming Lindsay could find some use for something else in the pack (she'll let you know how that worked out in a future post).
Anyway, on its own, that would have made a decent weapon for He-Man. But... if you're going to come this far... might as well break out the paint. |
I wound up pouring some time into this project - a bit more than I'd intended, to be honest. But, when it was all said and done, I have to say I'm awfully happy with the end result.
With He-Man armed a bit more appropriately, I could move onto Skeletor. But that'll have to wait for a future post. Three future posts, in fact. But in the meantime, here are some additional pictures:
